MEDIA RELEASE: Nominate your local Landcare Hero

Territory Natural Resource Management (TNRM) is calling on Territorians to nominate their local Landcare Hero for the 2021 Northern Territory Landcare Awards.

The Awards recognise individuals and groups in the Northern Territory for their outstanding contributions to preserving the unique Australian landscape such as the Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation who after winning the NT Coastcare Award in 2019 went on to win the National Coastcare Award in 2020.

Marine debris, in particular ghost nets pose a huge danger to marine life across the Territory’s coastline. These nets if left in the environment continue to fish, indiscriminately impacting threatened and endangered species through entanglement and ingestion.

The group won the award for their tireless work spanning 20 years to protect the natural and cultural values of land and sea country on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria from some of the highest densities of foreign-sourced rubbish in the world.

TNRM CEO Karen May said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of those who commit their time and energy to protecting the environment across the Territory.

“We know there is a lot of great work being done across the NT in some of the most remote locations, to care for our environment, and we want to hear their stories,” she said.

“The NT Landcare Awards is an opportunity to celebrate Landcare champions excelling in sustainable agricultural practices, conservation of land and waterways, coastlines and biodiversity.”

TNRM encourages nominations from groups, networks and individuals involved in protecting and improving their local environment.

Nominations are open in eight categories:

· Australian Government Partnerships for Landcare Award

· Australian Government Landcare Farming Award

· Coastcare Award

· Landcare Community Group Award

· Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award

· KPMG Indigenous Land Management Award

· Young Landcare Leadership Award

Nominations for the Northern Territory Landcare Awards close on Saturday, 18 December 2021. Winners will go forward to the 2022 National Landcare Awards held during the 2022 National Landcare Conference.
